Over the next few weeks I will be posting some mini blog interviews with different women across different industries who all now own their own businesses and are successful in their own right. I hope you enjoy this first instalment.

Aaliyah Bashier

Company Name: The beauty Clinic Woodley and Laser Hair Removal Clinic Woodley

Industry: Beauty and Aesthetics

I was lucky enough to meet this amazing lady over 3 years ago when I decided to have a laser treatment. Aaliyah was kind, funny and really knew her stuff and I instantly warmed to her. Over the last 3 years I have watched her develop and grow her very own business. She really is an inspiration. Aaliyah has kindly agreed to an interview to discuss how she has managed to juggle being a mum of 4, a wife and being an entrepreneur.

How long have you been in the industry and was this always your first choice?

I started in the beauty industry around 15 years ago and in 2010 I started to work at my first medical skin clinic, which I opened up with my husband. I also trained while working and decided to go towards medical lasers as a career.  I worked at the clinic for five years before going onto my own adventure after falling pregnant with my 4th child.

What pushed you to start your own business?

I was on maternity leave and just couldn’t commit to commercial clinic hours around a new baby and three other young children. So I set up my home business with small hours to suit. I started my clients again from scratch but I did have a couple of loyal clients that were happy to follow me. I picked a product I was confident and experienced in. I set up in a room from home.

Things grew quite quickly and I had to return back to being commercial again as I was losing many clients due to being fully booked.

What is your proudest achievement?

My proudest achievement are my children but in work life I have achieved my own successful business but it’s my family that I do it for. After setting up my business at home I felt really unsure about venturing back into a commercial premises. So I’m really glad I took the plunge!!

What sacrifices have you had to make along the way?

So many emotionally, physically and financially.

I have lost many years with my children as I had to return to work when they were babies and I relied on nurseries while at work.

Being self-employed I suppose you never do get a day off work. I have had to learn to balance business life and being a homemaker.

Mentally it is a challenge but keeping organised and having good time management is key!

Who are your main influencers and why?

My husband was a big influence for me. He has a lot of experience in business and staff management. He gave me a lot of guidance.

What has been your biggest challenge so far?

Definitely opening a beauty salon this year and re branding my existing laser business.

The refurbishment was really tough and expensive!

How do you market yourself?

I don’t really advertise and prefer to work through word of mouth. I do post regularly on social media and find Facebook works really well. Local gossip girl groups really did help to lift my business at the start.

I’m really surprised I am not saying google at this moment as I haven’t used that yet as a platform.

How do you ensure you stay current and competitive?

I ensure I stay up to date on the latest technology with our laser hair removal machines. I upgrade them often and like to give my clients the best on offer!

I use equipment with science backing and clinical trials. My products have to be the best, I won’t settle for anything less!

What are your future aspirations?

This year I did plan to step back slightly but instead I’ve gone the complete opposite. I don’t really plan too far ahead but I am looking to keep growing the business and work alongside my team to achieve and grow towards something positive.

What advice would you give someone who is looking to take the plunge full time?

Do a job you enjoy and have passion in your work.

A huge thank you to Aaliyah for sharing her journey to success as well as some extremely useful suggestions for anyone looking to take the plunge.
